“There Was an Old Lady that Swallowed Some Leaves” and Fun Craft

Turn storytime into a hands-on fall activity! “There Was an Old Lady that Swallowed Some Leaves” by Lucille Colandro is a breezy, whimsical rhyme book paired with vivid illustrations making it a chaotic tribute to autumn and an absolute page-turner for children. It is an excellent book for preschool through early elementary kids to practice sequencing, prediction, and seasonal vocabulary.

After reading “There Was an Old Lady that Swallowed Some Leaves” create an old lady craft and let the kids fill her big mouth with colorful autumn leaves. I made my own for the children in my care but you can print the template below.

You Will Need:

Free Activities and Old Lady Template
Card Stock Paper
Paper Leaves
Googly Eyes
Scissors
Glue Stick and White Glue
Black Marker

What to Do:

1. Create the old lady.
Use the template or make your own. I cut out a large peach-colored face, gray hair, a black hat, and a purple dress. Add a white collar and glue the pieces together.

2. Give her a silly expression.
Add googly eyes and draw a big open mouth with a black marker. Older children can cut out the mouth with adult help.

3. Feed her some leaves!
Let children glue colorful paper leaves inside the mouth and around the old lady. Encourage them to retell the story as they work.
