Rice-Dyed Easter Eggs

Looking for a fun, low-prep Easter activity to do with the kids? This rice-dye Easter egg craft is a nanny favorite! This activity feels like a sensory game and art project in one. The shaking, rolling, and surprise patterns make it exciting every time. Also see how to make Easter eggs with shaving cream or whipped cream, rubber bands, glitter, melted crayons, or with the eggmazing toy also on my blog.

You Will Need:

Hard-Boiled Eggs (cooled) or Plastic Eggs
Uncooked White Rice
Food Coloring
Ziploc Bags (sandwich or quart size)

What to Do:

1. Add the rice

Pour about ½ cup of uncooked rice into each Ziploc bag.

2. Add color

Drop 5–10 drops of food coloring into the rice. Seal the bag and shake it until the rice is fully colored. The kids in my care enjoyed using primary colors starting with yellow and adding more colors to change the colors to decorate the eggs.

3. Add, shake, and roll the egg

Place one hard-boiled or plastic egg into the bag, seal it again, and gently shake or roll it around so the colored rice coats the egg.

4. Let dry

Remove the eggs. Place eggs on paper towels or a tray to dry.

Tips for Nannies:

• Let the kids choose their own colors to encourage independence

• Use multiple bags for different colors to avoid mixing

• Great opportunity to talk about colors and patterns

• Works well for toddlers with supervision and preschoolers independently
