Hair Love by Matthew A. Cherry

Weekly Trip to the Library

You undoubtedly saw the Oscars last Sunday and that Matthew A. Cherry took home an Oscar when Hair Love won an Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film!

I highly recommend buying or borrowing the children’s book from the library and watching the short film.

Chicago native Matthew A. Cherry is a former NFL wide receiver turned filmmaker who played for the Jacksonville Jaguars, Cincinnati Bengals, Carolina Panthers, and the Baltimore Ravens. In 2007 he retired and moved to LA to pursue a career in entertainment. Now, he directs music videos and short films, including “Hair Love,” the animated short film on which this book is based.

Hair Love, is written by Matthew A. Cherry and illustrated by Vashti Harrison.

The story is a lovingly depicted tale of a young African American father trying to learn to style his daughters hair. The story is a celebration of her hair and the special relationship she has with her father.

Zuri is young and spirited, precocious and creative, and with the help of her dad is able to wrangle her hair into a style worthy of an extra special day. There are positive messages about patience and hard work, and Zuri has a keen awareness of her father’s workload and all he does for her, especially when her mother is out of town.

Harrison’s rich, stylish, vivid illustrations amplify the story, which is based on Cherry’s short animated film of the same name.
