How to Help Victims of Hurricane Sandy

If you aren’t able to personally provide shelter, supplies, or cash to those affected by Hurricane Sandy, it doesn’t mean you can’t help at all. There are many organizations along the East Coast that are providing shelter, food, and other supplies to victims of the hurricane. Here are ways to volunteer or donate to help those suffering from the affects of Hurricane Sandy.

Volunteer in NJ: The NJ State Department is directing volunteers to some of the hardest-hit areas. Those interested in helping should contact the Governor’s Office of Volunteerism at 609-633-9629 or 609-775-5236. Potential volunteers can also email rowena.madden@sos.state.nj.us

Samaritan’s Purse: To volunteer helping storm victims in NY and NJ, visit their website. Volunteers of all skill levels are needed. Volunteers will assist with debris clean up and mud outs.

The Red Cross: If you would like to give to the Red Cross, which has opened more than 190 shelters along the East Coast and has hundreds of disaster relief workers on standby, you can donate online, by calling 1-800-RED-CROSS, or by texting the word REDCROSS to 90999 to give $10.
The Red Cross is also asking for blood donors to visit www.redcrossblood.org/make-donation. Platelet donations, which are vital to cancer patients, can be made by calling (215) 451-4153. To learn more, visit RedCrossBlood.org.

The Salvation Army: You can donate $10 to the Salvation Army by texting “STORM” to 80888. If you are already volunteer-certified, you can sign up to help out with disaster relief. Click here to check out their web site.

New York Blood Center: You can donate blood, which will be used to help injured people, as well as hospital blood banks affected by the storm. Click here to learn more.

AmeriCares: AmeriCares provides medicine and other supplies to people affected by Hurricane Sandy. To donate, visit www.americares.org.

World Vision: Despite flooding at its Bronx, N.Y. warehouse, World Vision is organizing relief efforts. You can text “GIVEUSA” to 777444 to make a $10 donation, or donate online to help.

Comments

  1. I'm skeptical of giving money to the last fundraiser by nannies since I don't know them personally and they aren't a non profit but thanks for listing the options! 🙂 Hang in there ladies!

  2. Tobago nanny – 100% of all funds are going directly to the vicitims in cash! We have nannies, agencies and other nanny businesses supporting this cause. We were screened by fundrazr to make sure we were not a scam operation.
