Autumn Leaf Night Lights

Turn November’s colorful leaves into a little learning and a lot of fun! Pair autumn-themed storytime with a hands-on craft as children transform real fall leaves and glass jars into glowing night lights. I found this idea on the Fox Farm Home web site. LIt’s a creative way to explore nature, colors, textures, fine motor skills, and a little science.

Be sure to read children’s books about autumn leaves when doing this project including: “Red Leaf, Yellow Leaf,” “We’re Going on a Leaf Hunt,” “Leaf Man,” “Fall Leaves Colorful and Crunchy,” “Autumn Leaves,” and “My Leaf.”

You Will Need:

Pressed and Dried Autumn Leaves or Fabric Leaves
Paper
Heavy Books
Mason Jars or Recycled Glass Jars
Modge Podge
Paint Brushes
Battery Tea Lights or Fairy Lights

What to Do:

1. Read children’s books about autumn leaves with the children.

2. Go on a nature walk to collect leaves of different colors.

3. Press the leaves by placing them between paper and under heavy books for a day or two.

4. Wash and dry the glass jars.

5. Brush a thin layer of Mod Podge on the jar.

6. Have children gently press a leaf onto the jar, holding it until it sticks completely.

7. Brush another layer of Mod Podge over the top of the leaf to seal it and repeat the steps for the next leaves.

8. Let it dry completely. Put in battery operated tea light or fairy lights to make pretty night lights.
