“Creepy Sheepy” by Lucy Ruth Cummins & Make a Costume for Your Own Sheepy

Nothing tested a nanny’s patience quite like the annual Halloween costume crisis — until “Creepy Sheepy” came along.

In Lucy Ruth Cummins’s hilarious “Creepy Sheepy,” the wooly protagonist is determined not to follow the herd. While every other sheep in the pasture decides to dress up as a classic, generic ghost, Sheepy wants a look that actually stands out.

What follows is a witty, delightfully relatable story about individuality identity crisis, and the absolute chaos of costume hunting. It’s light, fast-paced, and wildly entertaining for toddlers through early elementary kids.

Pair reading “Creepy Sheepy” with this hands-on craft that lets kids design a custom, non-herd Halloween costume for their own paper sheep.

You Will Need:

White and black card stock paper
Scissors
Cotton balls or white pom-poms
Glue sticks and white glue
Googly eyes
Dress-up odds and ends: felt scraps, ribbons, sequins, foil paper, pipe cleaners, or washable markers.

What to Do:

1. Cut the Sheep Body
Cut a large oval from white paper (the body) and a small black oval (the face). Cut small rectangle or oval legs from black paper. Glue the head and legs to the body. (We used green paper for the Alien costume sheep).

2. Add the Wooly Fleece
Glue cotton balls all around the body to create a fluffy wool coat, leaving space for the face.

3. Attach the Face Details
Glue two googly eyes onto the black face. (We used a green for the alien costume).

4. Design a One-of-a-Kind Costume
Encourage the kids to think outside the box, just like Sheepy!

Some of our ideas:

Vampire Sheep: I helped the kids add a red felt cape and little white fangs.

Disco Sheep: A child in my care covered the entire sheep with sparkly sequins and a foil paper headband.

Alien Sheep: My Nanny Kid added extra googly eyes and pipe-cleaner antennae and used a green marker to color some of the cotton balls.

Witch Sheep: We used felt and ribbon to make the witches hat and cape. I made a little witch’s broom with a craft stick, chenille stems, and a ribbon for this sheep’s costume.
