Watercolor Tape Resist Spider Webs

Making watercolor spider webs after reading children’s books about spiders and spider webs is a fun, non-scary project to do with children as Halloween approaches.

Try reading, “Mrs. Spider’s Beautiful Web” by Beverly Randell and “Spiders” by Gail Gibbons to help the child learn about how amazing spiders can be, how beautiful webs are, and help to reduce their anxiety for spiders. “Anansi the Spider” by Gerald McDermott is another great children’s book to read with children and do corresponding learning projects. Read “I’m Trying to Like Spiders” by Bethany Barton to a child that doesn’t like spiders since it might change their minds.

You Will Need:

Painter’s Tape
Watercolor Paper or Card Stock Paper
Watercolor Paint
Watercolor Brushes
Small Jar Water

What to Do:

  1. Trim painter’s tape to make a spider web on the paper by making a plus (+) from the top to sides of the paper. Then, make an X through it from corner to corner. Then add another X if you want to: Connect each line with smaller pieces of tape to complete the web.
  2. Let the kids use watercolor paint to paint the web however they like.
  3. Once dry, carefully peel off the painter’s tape.
