Teaching Kids to Tie Shoes

Products Nannies Love

Since Velcro shoes hit the market it’s been harder and has taken longer to teach kids to tie their shoes. Once a child has the fine motor skills to make a knot, there are products available to help kids learn to tie shoes, even if they wear Velcro shoes. I also recommend watching videos with the kids on YouTube to help them learn how to tie shoes.

Start by reading children’s books about tying shoes. One of my favorite is Red Lace, Yellow Lace by Mark Casey and Judith Herbst. Each page features a unique poem which coincides to each step of tying shoes. The rhyming poems are short and easy to remember. Kids will recite them long after they’ve finished reading the book. It is a spiral bound book making it easy to lay flat and practice tying the laces in the book.

Kids learn through play. So having puzzles and pretend shoes in their playroom to practice tying shoes with can help them learn the skill. You can take the DIY Shoe Lace Tying Board anywhere, and never have to worry about the kids practicing to tie their laces with their dirty shoes on their clothes or carpet.

The Melissa and Doug Deluxe Wood Lacing Sneaker is a wooden high-top sneaker with a bright red and white lace. The wooden shoe is made to size for little fingers and heavy enough to stay in place on a table, so that kids lacing and tying for the first time don’t get frustrated. This fine motor skill all-star also encourages independence and helps build self-esteem.

Adapt-Ease shoe laces were founded by an Occupational Therapist to provide quality life-skill, learning and educational products to parents, teachers, and therapists. Adapt-Ease Multi Color Tying Aid Learning Shoelaces help children learn to tie by replacing their regular laces in their shoes with special dual colored laces. They come in 5 vibrant colors so that children can pick their favorite color.

Adapt-Ease Multi Color Tying Aid Learning Shoelaces may look ordinary but they are the most advanced shoelaces on the market and your child’s best bet when it comes to tying their shoes.

Adapt-Ease laces work remove the two biggest obstacles in shoe tying, lace confusion and floppy laces. Dual colors and textures aid in lace identification and the design of the lace holds its shape and allows early tiers time to tie.
