Some of the best nanny activities begin with a favorite story! “You’re My Little Pumpkin Pie” by Nicola Edwards is a sweet, autumn-themed board book filled with adorable illustrations and loving sentiments perfect for sharing with the youngest children in your care. It celebrates the loving bond between a caregiver and a little one through cute, cozy pumpkin-inspired rhymes.
I love that this sweet book features sturdy cut-out layered pages and shaped cut-outs that keep tiny hands curious and busy during storytime. The rhythmic, rhyming text is gentle, easy to read aloud, and fantastic for early language development.
After storytime, invite toddlers and young children to make their own happy pumpkin with this easy paper-plate craft. It’s a fun way to encourage early literacy, creativity, and fine motor skills!
You Will Need:
“You’re My Little Pumpkin Pie” by Nicola Edwards
Paper Plate
Orange Paint
Paint Brushes
Brown, Pink, White, and Black Construction Paper
Scissors
Jumbo Googly Eyes (for children aged 3+)
White Glue and/or Glue Sticks
Black Marker
What to Do:
1. Read the Book: Read “You’re My Little Pumpkin Pie” by Nicola Edwards.
2. Protect the Work Surface: Use a craft mat or a disposable tablecloth to protect the work surface.
3. Paint: Allow the child to paint the paper plate orange and let it dry completely.
4. Cut: Cut a small rectangle stem from brown construction paper, two circles from pink paper to make rosy cheeks, two large white circles for eyes, and small black circles for pupils.
5. Glue: Attach the stem to the top of the plate, pink circles on the plate to create cheeks, then the white and black circles to make eyes.
6. Decorate: Draw a happy smile with a black marker.
7. Show it off: Let your little pumpkin artist proudly display or play with their creation.
Safety Tip: Googly eyes can be a choking hazard for young children. We recommend simply cutting out eyes out of paper for children under 3-years-old or that are prone to put items in their mouths.
