Thumbprint Heart Salt Dough Necklaces are the perfect Valentine’s Day craft. Kids love mixing the ingredients, rolling the dough, cutting out the shapes with cookie cutters, using their fingers to make hearts, painting their pendants, and creating a heartfelt gift that their friends and family can wear all in one sweet activity.

You Will Need:

2 cups of flour
1 cup of salt
1 cup of water
Large Bowl
Wooden Spoon
Silicone Mat
Rolling Pin
Straw
Baking Sheet
Heart or Circle Cookie Cutters
Red Paint
Paintbrush or Cotton Swabs
Mod Podge
String, Yarn, or Lanyard

What to Do:

1. In a large bowl, mix the salt and flour. Gradually add the water in until it forms a nice thick dough. Don’t add too much water or the dough will get too sticky.

2. Roll the dough on a silicone mat until about around 1 cm to 3/4 inch thick.

3. Use a small heart or circle shaped cookie cutter to cut out shapes.

4. Poke a hole at top of each heart or circle shape with a straw.

5. Help the kids press their thumbs on the dough in a “V” shape to make a heart. The shape of dough pendant may change as they press their thumbs into the dough, but don’t worry — the pendants will still look good.

6. You can dry the shapes overnight or speed up the dying process by placing the shapes on a baking sheet and bake at a low heat of 120 degrees Fahrenheit.

8. Once hardened, allow the kids to use a paintbrush or cotton swab to paint their thumbprint hearts red.

9. Once the paint is dry use a paint brush to seal the hardened dough with mod podge so the necklace can last for years.

10. Thread the string, yarn, or lanyard through the hole and make a knot to make a necklace.
