Grilled cheese is a timeless comfort food that’s perfect for busy nanny days. It’s been my go-to side to soup all winter long for my Nanny Kids. Grilled cheese sandwiches are quick to make, kid-approved, and endlessly customizable by adding a protein like an egg, sliced turkey, beans, or bacon or a veggie like tomato or cooked spinach. With the right bread, the right cheese, and cooking over low heat, you can create a sandwich that’s crispy on the outside and perfectly melty on the inside. This simple classic is not only easy to prepare but also a reliable go-to meal that little ones love and caregivers trust.

You Will Need:
Bread: white, sourdough, or whole wheat
Cheese: American, cheddar, mozzarella, or a mix
Butter (softened) or mayonnaise
What to Do:
1. Preheat the pan
Heat a skillet over low to medium-low heat. This is key. Slow cooking melts the cheese without burning the bread.
2. Prepare the bread
Spread butter or mayo evenly on one side of each slice of bread. The fat creates that golden, crispy crust.
3. Assemble the sandwich
Place one slice of bread, butter-side down, in the pan. Add cheese, then top with the second slice, butter-side up.
4. Cook slowly
Let the sandwich cook for 3–5 minutes until the bottom is golden brown. Flip carefully and cook the other side
5. Finish and serve
When both sides are crisp and the cheese is fully melted, remove from heat. My Nanny Kids love when I slice the grilled cheese diagonally into triangles!
Nanny Tip: Cover the pan with a lid for 30–60 seconds to help the cheese melt faster without over-toasting the bread.
