Pinecone Bird Feeder and Winter Bird Books

Not all birds fly south for the winter. Read children’s books about winter birds listed below with the little ones in your care. Then, they will love making this simple bird feeder from a pine cone they find on a nature hike for the birds that have stayed in the neighborhood for the winter.

You Will Need:

Read “The Winter Bird” by Kate Banks, “Snow Birds” by Kristen Hall, and “Birds in Winter” by Jenny Fretland VanVoorst
Collect a Pinecone or Buy Some Pinecones
Heavy Cotton String or Twine
Scissors
Peanut Butter
Paper Plate
Birdseed

What to Do:

1. Read books about winter birds with the children (listed above).

2. Wrap the string around the top of the pinecone, tight enough so that it can resist weathering.

3. Pat a fair amount of peanut butter over the pinecone and in-between the crevices.

4. Pour birdseed onto plate or tray.

5. Roll the pinecone in some birdseed until it is well covered.

6. Hang the pinecone bird feeder in a tree.
