As a nanny, I’ve dodged LEGO landmines, negotiated snack treaties, and performed bedtime song encores like I’m on a never-ending toddler tour. But every 4th of July, I trade the chaos for an easy charcuterie board — and this year, I went full founding foodie with red and blue berries and white cheese and crackers shaped like the American flag. Because nothing says “freedom” like a snack that screams USA.
Picture this: rows of juicy strawberries and raspberries, alternating with crackers and Monterey Jack slices or Gouda, white cheddar, or mozzarella cubes, all neatly aligned. In the top left corner? A square of blueberries.
The kids were dazzled. The parents? Impressed. And me? Just quietly reveling in the kids enjoying a healthy snack without having to heat the kitchen or house by turning on the oven.
So this 4th, skip the sparklers and start with snacks. Your taste buds will thank you.
Life, liberty, and the pursuit of gouda.
You Will Need:
Platter or Cutting Board
Monterey Jack, Gouda, White Cheddar, or Mozzarella Cheese (slice or cubes)
Crackers
Strawberries, Raspberries, and Blueberries
What to Do:
1. Wash and dry the berries and slice and/or cube the white cheeses.
2. Align the cheese, crackers, and red berries into stripes on a platter or cutting board.
3. Place blueberries in a square on the left top corner of the platter to represent an American flag.
