Coffee Filter Flowers

My youngest Nanny Kid loves flowers. I borrowed these 8 great children’s books about flowers from the library and helped her make these realistic looking flowers from coffee filters. I found the idea from the One Little Project website and adjusted it to make it a little easier for a 7-year-old to make.

You can purchase the books and supplies needed to make this project by tapping the links below or by visiting my storefront by clicking here.

You Will Need:

8 Great Children’s Books About Flowers

2 Baking Sheets

4 Coffee Filters

Water

Liquid Water Color Paint or Food Coloring

Plastic Bowls or Styrofoam Bowls

Paint Brushes

Green Chenille Stem

What to Do:

1. Make a stack of 4 coffee filters. Fold the coffee filters in half, then in half again, and in half another time.

2. Cut a rounded petal shape across the wide edge of the folded coffee filters.

3. Unfold the coffee filters and place each filter on a baking tray. Use your hands to press them out so the coffee filters lie flat.

4. Add 1/4 cup of water to a small bowl. Repeat in other bowls for additional colors.

6. Add a few drops of liquid watercolor paint or food coloring to the water.

7. Have the children use a paint brush to add color to the coffee filters. For realistic flowers, place yellow in the center of the coffee filters and other colors on the tips of the petals. The water will gently blend the colors together.

8. Allow the coffee filters to dry for 3 hours, or you can dry the filters more quickly by putting in the oven at 130 F for 5 to 10 minutes.

9. Separate the coffee filters into 2 piles with 2 coffee filters for each flower.

10. Place your finger in the center of the flower and then bring the coffee filters up and around your finger. Pinch and twist them together a bit at the bottom.

11. Place the end of a chenille stem about 1/2 inch from the bottom point of the coffee filters. Tightly wrap the pipe cleaner around the coffee filters spiraling down until it covers the bottom point. Leave the rest of the pipe cleaner straight as the stem.
