Salt Dough Ornaments

Making salt dough ornaments is an easy holiday craft with impressive results. They look like cookies that are good enough to eat, but they are Christmas decorations and gifts. All you need is all-purpose flour, salt, water, and some decorations. Just mix, cut, bake, and decorate!

You Will Need:

4 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup table salt
1 1/2 cups warm water
Rolling pin
Cookie cutters
Glitter, paint, and ribbon for decoration
Polyurethane spray to seal

What to Do:

1. Preheat oven to 300 degrees F.
2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour and salt.
3. Slowly add the warm water while stirring until it comes together.
4. Finish mixing with hands and knead until the dough is soft, about five minutes.
5. Place half of the dough between two large pieces of parchment paper. Roll out until 1/8″ thick and then remove the top sheet of parchment.
6. Using cookie cutters, cut shapes but leave them on the parchment. Peel away the excess dough and transfer the parchment with shapes to a baking sheet.
7. Using a straw or toothpick, poke a hole for a ribbon or ornament hanger.
8. Bake in preheated oven for 1 hour or until hard.
9. Once cooled, decorate using paint and glitter.
10. To seal, spray your decorated ornament with a light coat of polyurethane spray.
11. Thread the ribbon and hang on the tree or give as gifts to friends.
