Binny’s Diwali by Thrity Umrigar

Even if your Nanny Family doesn’t celebrate Diwali it’s important to teach children about other cultures whenever given the opportunity. Diwali starts this Thursday so I picked up Binny’s Diwali at the library.

Diwali is a festival of lights and one of the major festivals celebrated by Hindus, Jains, Sikhs, and some Buddhists. The festival usually lasts five days.

In Binny’s Diwali, Binny wakes up happy, but nervous. It is her day to share about Diwali, the Festival of Lights! Binny is excited to talk to her class about her favorite holiday. But she struggles to find the words.

Taking a deep breath, she tells her classmates about the fireworks that burst like stars in the night sky, leaving streaks of gold and red and green.

She shares with her classmates the delicious pedas and jalebis. And she shows them clay lamps, called diyas, which look so pretty all the children ooh and aah.

With enchanting illustrations, Binny’s Diwali is a great book to help kids learn detailed information about the Hindu Festival of Lights.
