Compound Caterpillars

Creative Wednesdays

It is fun making Compound Caterpillars with the kids. Explain that a compound word is two separate words that are combined to make one word. Take turns naming compound words. Write the words on a chart. Then create Compound Caterpillars as we did below.

You Will Need:

Construction Paper
Markers
Circle to Trace

What to Do:

1. Fold construction paper in half lengthwise. Then fold in half two times. Trace a round shape onto the folded paper making sure to overlap the folded ends a little. Cut out the circle on folded paper making sure not to cut the folded ends. Unfold to have two caterpillars.

2. Have the child fold the the left and right ends of the caterpillar in to need the middle. Have the child pick a word from the compound word chart you made and write the word on the outside flaps of the cutout — one word per flap.

3. Allow the child to unfold the flaps and write the compound word on the inside of the caterpillar.
