Thanksgiving Day Parade Book and Activities

Balloons Over Broadway

The kids I care for are going to the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade on Thanksgiving morning so I borrowed “Balloons over Broadway” by Melissa Sweet from the library to prepare them for the fun and festivities. But if your charges aren’t goingto the parade they will still love watching the parade on television and reading this book. Perhaps the best part is there a free activitiy kit online to use with kids after reading it.

If the kids you care for go to the parade or watch the parade on television they will love this picture book. Subtitled, The True Story of the Puppeteer of Macy’s Parade, this colorful book tells the story of Tony Sarg and how he developed the huge balloon puppets that have delighted parade viewers since 1928.

The intriguing illustrations, a combination of watercolors and mixed media collages, will captivate children with their variety and details.
