Charlie and Lola: Snow is My Favorite and My Best by Lauren Child

Weekly Trip to the Library

Nothing is sadder for my four-year-old charge then when her snowman starts to melt after a fun day of playing in the snow. Luckily we found a great children’s book discussing the same feelings.

One of my favorite children’s books authors is Lauren Child. This week while at the library I found a Lauren Child book in which one of the main characters, Lola, is sad when the snow starts to melt. Lauren Child brilliantly and hilariously captures every-kid feelings and emotions — this time about the magical first snowfall of the year.

In Charlie and Lola: Snow is My Favorite and My Best the narrator of the book is Charlie, Lola’s older brother. He describes how much his sister Lola loves snow. When the weatherman predicts snow, Lola absolutely cannot wait. She just loves snow. “Why can’t it be winter ALL the time?” she asks her brother. But on an adventure to the Arctic, Charlie shows Lola why never-ending snow might not be so perfect for kids. How could Lola go swimming or wear her favorite stripe-y party dress if it were always cold?

At the end of the book Charlie makes a little snowman he keeps in the freezer for his sister. So, one of the older brothers of my little charge did the same thing. He made this little snowman for her and stuck it in the freezer and surprised her with the adorable gift.

And if you don’t have natural snow outside you can help the kids make realistic-looking snow inside the house that feels cold to the touch. Simply purchase Be Amazing Insta-Snow Jar. The 3 1/2″ oz. plastic jar of non-toxic “snow” powder comes with an activity guide and a measuring scoop. You just add water and make up to two gallons of fake snow. Just mix one teaspoon of Insta-Snow powder with two ounces of room temperature water to produce the best quality snow. We recommended making your snow in smaller quantities to get the best batches. Insta-Snow® powder expands 100 times its original volume. Just a small amount of powder is needed to make an impressive quantity of snow.

Just cover a table or floor with a plastic table cloth (for easy clean up) and pour the fake snow into a large tray. The kids can use measuring cups or sand toys like small shovels and buckets to play with the snow. They can build tiny snowmen or simply let them play with animal figurines in the fake snow.

  1. Fun ideas!

  2. This is such a fun book and what a great idea to do the same activities in the book with the kids.
