Autumn Indian Corn Craft

Little hands love making this colorful Indian corn craft made from chenille stems and pony beads found at One Little Project. It’s the perfect mix of creativity and fine motor skill fun. It is part art project, part sensory play, and all-around adorable. Read the children’s books listed below about corn as the kids get to thread their way through a harvest of Indian corn colors and then share them as homemade gifts on Thanksgiving day.

Be sure to read “Corn” by Gail Gibbons, “Corn is Maize The Gift of the Indians” by Aliki, and “Turkeys, Pilgrims, and Indian Corn” by Edna Barth when making this Indian corn craft.

You Will Need:

4 Tan or BrownChenille Stems (12-inch length)
Plastic Pony Beads (approximately 120 beads)
Rafia Ribbon (optional)

What to Do:

  1. Use four 12-inch tan or brown colored pipe cleaners and an assortment of beads in autumn shades you like best.
  2. Evenly twist then space each pipe cleaner and spread them into the shape of a star.
  3. Start threading the beads onto each pipe cleaner, until all 8 rows are covered. Be sure to leave a little over an inch of chenille stem showing on each end so you have enough to twist your husks later. Approximately 15 beads per row.
  4. Once the star is covered in beads, bend each chenille stem row upward and gather the ends together.
  5. Twist the tops of the chenille stems a couple of times to secure the beads and form the corn “husks.” You can add rafia ribbon as well to look like real corn husks. Be sure to leave some ends free and fan them out a bit.
