Why Kids Should Paint with Natural Paintbrushes

Who needs synthetic paint bristles when the forest is full of flair? Inspired by “Wonder Art Workshop” by Sally Haughey — a magical mashup of art and nature — we’re making Nature Paintbrushes. So go on and gather eco-friendly, natural bristles, bind them to twigs, paint, and repeat.

You Will Need:

Sticks (aka nature’s handle)
Leaves, Grass, Pine Needles, Weeds, Feathers, Seed Pods (whatever the backyard offers)
Rubber Bands or Twine
Scissors
Painting Paper Pad
Craft Mat, Newspaper, or Disposable Tablecloth

What to Do:

1. Take a walk in the neighborhood and have the kids pick up twigs and items with interesting textures — floppy leaves, pinecones, fern fronds, even fluffy dandelions if they are feeling brave.

2. Wrap the natural “bristles” to the end of a stick using twine or a rubber band. Arrange them so they look like a paint brush.

4. Cover the work area with a craft mat, newspaper, or a plastic tablecloth.

4. Add paint to a disposable bowl and let the kids get wild on paper. Don’t worry about precision — this is more Monet than Michelangelo.
