Outdoor Nature Sorting

Summer learning has never been so fun!

Read “Hello Hello: Opposites” by Brendan Wenzel with the children In your care then sort items you find in nature into opposites outside.

Hello Hello: Opposites” by Brendan Wenzel is a vibrant and engaging picture book that explores the concept of opposites through a wide array of animals. With his signature mixed-media illustrations, Wenzel brings creatures of all shapes, sizes, colors, and habitats to life, linking them with simple, poetic text.

The book not only teaches opposites in a fun and accessible way, but also subtly encourages curiosity about biodiversity and conservation. It’s perfect for young readers, offering both visual delight and educational value.

After reading “Hello Hello: Opposites” by Brendan Wenzel put down two hula hoops in the family’s driveway. Use sidewalk chalk to write two opposites above, or inside, the hula hoops for the children to sort objects such as: “Big” and “Small,” “Smooth” and “Bumpy,” or “Soft” and “Hard” with sidewalk chalk

Have the kids gather pebbles, rocks, flower petals, sticks, acorns, sea shells, and more in their yard and neighborhood.

Then have the children sort the objects they collected in the hula hoops
