Kids love collecting shells at the beach. There’s something magical about turning a handful of seashells into a little keepsake masterpiece. For children, making shell mosaics on air-dry clay isn’t just an art project, each shell is a tiny treasure, and pressing it into soft clay feels like discovering buried gold. I found this great shell mosaic keepsake idea on the helllowondeful web site.

You Will Need:
Craft Mat, Newspaper, or Disposable
Tablecloth
Parchment Paper or Cheese Cloth
Air-Dry Clay
Rolling Pin
Large Cookie Cutters
Small Seashells
Straws
Twine

What to Do:
1. Have the children collect small sea shells in a mesh bag (so the sand can fall out of bag) at the beach or buy some craft shells.
2. Wash and dry the sea shells.
3. Protect the work surface.
4. Use a rolling pin to roll out air-dry clay on a smooth surface with parchment paper or cheese cloth to about 1/2″ to 3/4″ thickness.
6. Use a large cookie cutter to cut out a circle from the clay.
7. Use a straw to poke a hole at the top of the clay circle.
8. Allow the children to press small shells into the clay in any pattern they want. Make sure they press hard enough to create an imprint, but not so hard that they break the clay.
9. Let the clay shapes dry for a few days until the clay has hardened.
10. After the clay has fully dried, thread a piece of twine through the hole at the top to make a souvenir mosaic of their day at the beach.
