Sink or Float Game

Looking for a simple, engaging game that sparks curiosity and giggles? Try this Sink or Float Game.

Why do kids love it? Because it’s science disguised as play. They get to gather random household items, make predictions (“Will this spoon sink?” “What about this crayon?”), and then test their hypotheses in water. It’s hands-on, a little messy, and full of surprises.

As a nanny, it’s a golden opportunity to teach observation, build vocabulary (“It’s buoyant!”, “It’s dense!”), and sneak in STEM learning, while staying cool on a hot summer day. Of course Sink or Float can be played inside in a sink or bathtub all year round as well.

You Will Need:

A Bowl, Tub, Sink, or Pool of Water
Plastic Toys, Rocks, Pebbles, Wooden Blocks, Measuring Cups, and Kitchen Items
Pad of Paper and Pen to Record Results (optional)

What to Do:

1. If playing with a big tub or pool outside have the children wear bathing suits.

2. Collect a variety of everyday items, such as plastic toys, kitchen objects, wooden blocks, and anything else you think might be interesting to test.

3. Discuss with the children which items you think will float and which will sink. You can even draw a chart to record your predictions.

4. Place each item in the water one by one. Observe what happens and compare your predictions to the results.

5. Talk about why some items floated and others sank. With older children explain the concept of density and how it relates to buoyancy.
