Patriotic Star Sun Catcher

The little ones on your care will love making and displaying these patriotic sun catchers for Memorial Day and summer holidays. Be sure to share children’s books about the holiday with the little ones too: “Memorial Day” by Emma Carlson Berne, “Why do We Celebrate Memorial Day” by Kirsten Lake, and “A Day for Rememberin’” by Leah Henderson.

You Will Need:

Children’s Books About Memorial Day (see above)
Large Star Template
Printer
Card Stock Paper or Construction Paper Tissue Paper Squares
Self-Adhesive Laminating Sheets
Scissors
Hole Punch
Twine, Yarn, or Ribbon

What to Do:

1. Read children’s books about Memorial Day with the children.

2. Print a large star template.

3. Carefully cut out the inside of the shape leaving a border. Young children will need you to cut the shapes for them, while older children can cut out the star themselves.

4. Peel off the backing of self-adhesive laminating sheet and place it with the sticky side facing up on the table.

5. Place the star on the self-adhesive laminating sheet.

6. Have the child place red, white, and blue  tissue paper squares onto the sticky sheet inside of the star.

7. Place another piece of self-adhesive laminating sheet on top of the star to seal them.

8. Trim the shape leaving a bit of laminating sheets around the edges of the star.

9. Use a hole punch to make a small hole at the top of the sun catcher.

10. String twine, yarn, or ribbon through the hole to hang the sun catcher in a window.
