“Bear Snores On” by Karma Wilson and Paper Plate Bear Crafts

The end of February and March, when it’s still cold but the days are getting longer as Spring approaches, is the perfect time to discuss animals coming out of hibernation with children.

Start the conversation by reading the board book, “Bear Snores On” by Karma Wilson and illustrated by Jane Chapman and then make these simple bear crafts with the toddler or preschooler in your care.

In “Bear Snores On” by Karma Wilson several different animals find their way out of the bitter cold and into the Bear’s cave to warm up. After trying several different ways to wake him, Bear just snores on. When Bear finally does wake up and sees his cave full of uninvited guests — all of them having a party without him!

You Will Need:

“Bear Snores On” by Karma Wilson
Large Paper Plates
Brown Tissue Paper Squares
Brown, Black, and White Cardstock Paper
White Glue
Paint Brush
Craft Scissors

What to Do:

  1. Cut brown tissue paper into small squares or use precut tissue paper squares. Let older kids practice their cutting skills.
  2. Paint white glue all over the paper plate and allow the child put the tissue paper all over the paper plate as fur.
  3. Cut out the bear’s facial features from the cardstock. I made closed eyes for a sleeping bear, open eyes for the awake bear, ears, nose, and mouth.
  4. Allow the child to glue the cardstock pieces to the bear’s face.
