Heart-Shaped Watercolor Resist Paintings

This is a fun drawing and painting project to do with kids for Valentine’s Day. I found the concept at thecrafttrain.com. The children will find it magical watching their crayon designs become more vivid and change as they paint over them with liquid water color paints.

You Will Need:

Free Heart Template
Water Color Paper
White and Light Colored Crayons
Liquid Watercolor Paint
Paint Cups or Disposable Plastic Cups
Sponge Brush
Scissor
Pencil

What to Do:

1. Trace a heart onto water color paper and cut it out with scissors.

2. Allow the children to decorate the hearts with crayons leaving plenty of paper white for water color paint. White and light colored crayons work best as a contrast to the water color paint, but I didn’t want to stifle their creativity and allowed the children to use any color crayons they wanted to.

3. Pour a small amount of liquid water color paint into paint cups or disposable plastic cups. Use a different color in each cup.

4. Have the children use sponge brushes to paint over their drawings.

5. Once dry, cut the hearts out. Hang them on a window. Or, use them to make Valentine’s  Day cards by writing on the back of the hearts or by pasting the hearts onto folded construction paper.
