It is the start of Chinese New Year (or Lunar New Year) and it is the year of the snake. Read “Whispers of the Snake: A Chinese New Year Book: A Story for Kids to Celebrate the Year of the Snake and Learn about Chinese Traditions” by Chloe E. Gore and then help the children in your care make a split pin snake to celebrate the holiday.
This beautifully illustrated story is perfect for children ages 3-8, introducing them to the Chinese Zodiac and the significance of the Year of the Snake.

You Will Need:
Snake Template (see below)
Printer
Heavyweight Paper
Markers, Crayons or Colored Pencils
Scissor
Split Pins

What to Do:
- Print out our snake template or make your own snake.
- Allow the children to decorate their snake with markers, crayons, or colored pencils.
- Cut out the parts of the snake.
- Poke a hole into each section of the snake by pushing a split pin near the end of the piece of snake. Then push the split pin through the end on the next part of the snake.
- Flip the snake over and separate the split pin to open it to be flat.
- Continue adding spilt pins to attach sections of the snake together.
