Cardboard Embroidered Ornaments

I love saving money by doing projects with the kids with items found in their recycling bin. This week I traced some stars and circles onto recycled cardboard and allowed the children to use embroidery thread, ribbon, and yarn to decorate the cardboard shapes. Click here to see other cardboard ornaments to make with children.

Be sure to read, “The Broken Ornament” by Toni DiTerlizzi while making these ornaments with the children.

You Will Need:

Cardboard
Holiday Cookie Cutters or Shapes to Trace
Pencil
Scissors
Hole Punch
Embroidery Thread, Ribbon and/or Yarn
Plastic Needles
Hot Glue or Tape
Markers or Sharpie Paint Markers

What to Do:

1. Flatten clean cardboard from the recycling bin.

2. Trace holiday cookie cutters or templates, (I used stars and circles), onto cardboard. Cut out the shapes.

3. Use a hole punch to make holes inside the cardboard shapes for the kids to use to embroidery thread, ribbon, or yarn.

4. Allow the kids to use plastic needles with thread, ribbon, and yarn to decorate the cardboard shapes. Use tape or hot glue to secure the thread, ribbon, and yarn to the back of the ornament.

5. Allow the kids to further decorate the ornaments with markers or Sharpie Paint Pens if they want to.

6. Attach ribbon or yard with hot glue or tape to the back of the ornament to hang on a Christmas tree.
