Scissor Skills Autumn Tree

It’s Autumn in my neck of the woods, making it a great time to read children’s books about autumn and the changing colors of the leaves with the little ones in my care. I also had the kids practice their scissors skills while making autumn trees out of construction paper.

I recommend reading children’s books about changing  leaves in autumn including: “Good Bye Summer, Hello Autumn,” “Red Leaf, Yellow Leaf,” “We’re Going on a Leaf Hunt,” “Leaf Man,” “Fall Leaves Colorful and Crunchy,” “Autumn Leaves,” and “My Leaf Book.

Then, make trees with paper strips the kids have cut themselves.

You Will Need:

Children’s Books About Changing Colors of Leaves (see list above)
Construction Paper
Ruler
Pencil
Scissor
Glue Stick
Black Marker

What to Do:

  1. Cut out a tree trunk from brown construction paper and use a glue stick to paste it to white paper.
  2. Use a pencil and ruler to draw lines on colored construction paper for the children to cut out strips with their scissors.
  3. Fold a tab at end of each strip of paper. Use a glue stick to paste the tabs onto the top of the tree trunk and white paper. The strips can be twisted and curled if chosen.
  4. Use a black marker to add details to the bark of the tree if desired.
