Chalk and Pastel Fourth of July Fireworks

I had planned to just use red, white, and blue sidewalk chalk to have the kids make Fourth of July fireworks on black paper while reading, “The Night Before the Fourth of July” by Amy Wummer, “Fireworks and Freedom” by Educational Parade, and “Fireworks” by Lori Haskins Houran. But I allowed them to let their imaginations run wild and they made beautiful rainbow fireworks as well.

You Will Need:

Children’s Books about Fireworks (see above)
Black Paper
Heavyweight or Card Stock Paper
Star Templates
Printer
Scissor
Painters Tape (optional)
Colored Chalk and/or Pastels

What to Do:

1. Read children’s books about fireworks.

2. Protect the work surface.

3. Print out different sizes stars on heavyweight paper and cut them out.

4. Have the kids place the stars on black paper. You can use a little bit of painters tape to keep the stars in place.

5. Have the children use chalk or pastels to draw around the edges of the stars. Once done they can smudge the colors to make them look even more like fireworks.
