“Grandma’s Purse” by Vanessa Brantley Newton and Quilted Purse Craft

This is an adorable project to do as a literary connection to the picture book “Grandma’s Purse” by Vanessa Brantley Newton.

In the book, when Mimi’s Grandmother comes to visit she always brings warm hugs, sweet treats, and her purse. Mimi never knows what her Grandmother have in there — fancy jewelry, tokens from around the world, or something special just for her Granddaughter. It might look like a normal bag from the outside, but Mimi and her Granddaughter know that it’s pure magic!

Plastic Needles

What to Do:

1. Read “Grandma’s Purse” or play this video of the author reading the book by clicking here.

2. Print purse templates onto card stock paper. Cut out the purse and handle of purse.

3. Help small kids cut out pieces of gingham and scrapbook paper to use to decorate the purse and handle of the purse. Older children can cut out their own shapes.

4. Allow the children to glue the pieces of scrapbook paper to the outside of purses.

5. Once dry, punch holes around the outside edges of the purse.

6. String yarn into a plastic needle. Knot one end of the yarn so it stays in place on the purse.

7. Allow the children to lace the two purse pieces together. Knot the end of the yarn so it stays in the purse.

8. Glue the handle of the purse to the inside of one side of the purse (and we also stapled it) and allow it to dry before the children play with the purse.
