“Winter Trees” by Carole Gerber and Bubble Wrap Painting

Have the kids paint with bubble wrap to make a snow covered tree after reading “Winter Trees” by Carole Gerber.

In “Winter Trees” a boy and his dog stroll through the winter forest discovering seven different types of trees. This book is a fun early introduction to tree identification and a great way to encourage appreciation for nature. The intricate illustrations and lyrical text make distinguishing different types of trees easy — even in the middle of winter, when only bare branches stand like skeletons against the sky.

You Will Need:

“Winter Trees” by Carole Gerber
Empty Toilet Paper Tube
Bubble Wrap
Blue Card Stock Paper
White Paint
Paper Plate
Scissors
Markers and Crayons

What to Do:

1. Protect the work space and gather the supplies.

2. Draw a brown tree trunk and branches on a blue card stock paper.

3. Take a sheet of bubble wrap around the cardboard tube. I just tucked the ends into the open ends of the tubes to hold the bubble wrap secure. But you can use packing tape or a rubber band to secure the bubble wrap if necessary.

4. Squirt a small amount of white paint onto a paper plate.

5. Have the kids roll the bubble wrap tube in the white paint. They don’t need a lot of paint.

6. Roll the bubble wrap tube on the blue paper with the brown tree. If the tube needs more paint just run the tube on the paper plate then continue.

7. Allow to dry.

8. Alternately, the children can paint with bubble wrap first and draw the brown tree on the paper after the paint dries.
