Thankful Chains and “Thankful” by Elaine Vickers

Thankful” by Elaine Vickers is the perfect children’s book (and project) to do with children for Thanksgiving or anytime of the year.

Thankful” is a beautiful story of being thankful. Each year, a little girl writes down the things she’s thankful for on strips of paper and links them together. As one idea leads to another, her chain grows longer.

There’s so much good in her life: a friend, things that are warm, things that are cold, colors, and things that can be fixed.

I also love the illustrations in this book. They are hand-built 3-dimensional sets that were photgraphed.

Making a thankful paper chain makes a great activity to do with early elementary and elementary-aged children as well. With Thanksgiving coming up it’s the perfect time to start the thankful chain.

You Will Need:

“Thankful” by Elaine Vickers
Construction Paper
Pencils and Pens
Glue Sticks or Tape

What to Do:

1. Read “Thankful” by Elaine Vickers with the children.

2. Cut out the same size strips of paper from construction paper. I made about 81/2 inches by 2 inch strips.

3. Allow the children to write down one thing they are thankful for on each strip of paper.

4. Attach the strips
