In “Meet Georges Seurat,” Seurat the artist describes his unique approach to art. He describes pointillism and how to use math, logic, and lots of dots to make beautiful paintings. I had the children I care for use the idea of pointillism to make autumn leaves for 3D cardboard trees.
Also be sure to read children’s books about leaves when doing this project including: “Red Leaf, Yellow Leaf,” “We’re Going on a Leaf Hunt,” “Leaf Man,” “Fall Leaves Colorful and Crunchy,” “Autumn Leaves,” and “My Leaf Book.“

You Will Need:
Cardboard X-Acto Knife Scissors Paint or Pastels

What to Do:
1. Draw a tree on cardboard and cut it out with scissors and an X-Acto knife.
2. Trace the tree onto another piece of cardboard and cut it out.
3. Allow child to decorate the tree pieces with paint and/or pastels. Have them make leaves by making dots like George Seurat with pointillism if they want to.
4. Cut a slit in the center of the trunk of tree from the edge of the trunk until about half the way up the tree trunk.
5. Cut a slit in the center on the top of the tree from the top of leaves to about half way down the tree.
6. Slide the bottom and top of tree together via the slits and display the tree in the child’s playroom or bedroom.
