Here’s a cute project I found on the First Pallette web site. I always include children’s books that correspond with the projects we do. I read “Are You a Dragonfly?” by Judy Allen and “Fast Facts About Dragonflies” by Garstecki-Derkovitz while doing this project. My 7-year-old Nanny Kid clipped her pretty dragonflies on her bedroom curtains and one as a bookmark.
You Will Need:
Wooden Clothespins
Colored Craft Paper
Tempera Paint
Paint Brushes
Googly Eyes
White Glue
Scissors
Sharpie Markers
Waxed Paper or Parchment Paper
Pom Poms, Stickers, Glitter (any decorations)
Kids Rubber Gloves (optional)
What to Do:
1. Protect the work surface and have the children wear latex or rubber gloves if you don’t want their hands getting dirty.
2. Have the kids paint or color wooden clothespins to make a dragonflies bodies. They can paint it with a single color or make a multi-colored dragonfly.
3. Make a pair of wings by folding a small piece of colored card stock paper in the middle. Draw one top and one slightly smaller bottom wing along the folded edge of the paper to fit inside the clothespin.
4. Allow the children to decorate the wings however they want to.
5. Pinch open the clothespin and glue the middle section of the wings onto the top prong’s inner side. Clip the clothespin onto waxed paper or something while waiting for the glue to dry. This will prevent the clothespin from being accidentally glued shut.
6. Attach a pair of googly eyes to the front of the clothespin.
7. Be sure wrong read age appropriate children’s books about fireflies including: “Are You a Dragonfly?” by Judy Allen or “Fast Facts About Dragonflies” by Garstecki-Derkovitz
