Indoor Snowman with Homemade Cloud Dough

I love trying different types of homemade play dough with kids. Could dough feels amazing and is a great boredom buster anytime of the year.

But since it is winter where I work and live in New Jersey it is the perfect time to read “Charlie and Lola: Snow is My Favorite and My Best” by Lauren Child and make cloud dough that looks like snow. I used baby lotion without dyes and didn’t add food coloring to the recipe so the dough would remain white like snow.

This cloud dough dries out quickly so you will need to wrap it with plastic wrap prior to putting in air right container if you want to save it. Just add a little lotion if it dries too fast.

The perfect book to read with this project is “Charlie and Lola: Snow is My Favorite and My Best” by Lauren Child. In the story, Lola is sad that her snowman she made has melted. Her brother Charlie makes a snowman for his sister Lola and keeps it in the freezer so she can keep a snowman indoors. Have the children in your care pretend the cloud dough is snow and make snowmen inside their home just like Charlie and Lola.

I also recommend reading other children’s books about snowmen such as: “Snowmen at Night” by Caralyn Buehner and “How to Catch a Snowman“by Adam Wallace and Andy Elkerton. Read children’s books about snow when making this project such as “All the Little Snowflakes,” “The Story of Snow,” “Curious About Snow,” and “Snowflakes Fall,”The Snowy Day.”

You Will Need:

2 Cups Corn Starch
1 Cup White Baby Lotion such as Baby Magic
Decorations such as Raisins, Carrots, and Pretzels

What to Do:

1. Add 1/2 cup of Baby Magic to a bowl. Add 1 cup of Corn Starch and mix with a spatula until combined.

2. Knead the dough with your hands on wax paper or silicon mat. Keep kneading until it forms a dough-like consistency. If it’s still too sticky add another tablespoon of cornstarch.

3. Once your cloud dough is finished, let the children make balls to make a snowman. They can also use cookie cutters and rolling pins to play with the could dough. We decorated our snowman with raisins, as piece of carrot, and two pretzel sticks.

4. Store playdough in plastic wrap and store in an airtight container to help it last longer. If the dough dries out, add a few extra squirts of lotion to it and knead back in. Discard after a week or so.
