Rethinking Columbus: The Next 500 Years

New Way to Learn About Columbus

Rethinking Columbus: The Next 500 Years

There is a lot of controversy about Columbus Day. Columbus Day is observed on the second Monday in October every year to honor the anniversary of the “discovery” of America on October 12, 1492.

From the viewpoint of the Europeans, Columbus discovered North America. In reality, Columbus discovered the world is round and very big. But the regions he “discovered” were already inhabited by other people. Columbus was incredibly cruel to the indigenous people he called “Indians.”

The original edition of this book made educational history by introducing a startling new view of Columbus. In the revised edition we have even richer material. The new edition has over 100 pages of new material, including a role-play trial of Columbus, materials on Thanksgiving Day, resources, historical documents, poetry, and more. It will help readers replace murky legends with a better sense of who we are and why we are here — and celebrates over 500 years of the courageous struggles and lasting wisdom of native peoples.
